The site is well-done. Excellent job. Well organized. I just wish more people appreciated how much groups like the 91st BG gave so that little American kiddies in the 21st Century, could sit and eat their McDonald's "Happy Meals" in peace and without fear. I *salute* all the officers, enlisted airmen, ground-crews and staff personnel who made it all possible. --Jesse Carnes Associate Member 91st BGMA

Hello! I am a WWII novelist researching for my 4th novel. This novel will include a B-17 bomber crew in fall 1944. I am especially interested in the bombing raid of Berlin on December 4, 1944. This is my fourth WWII novel. You can read more about my other books at www.thegoyers.com/dustandashes or www.triciagoyer.com I love writing about WWII and interviewing WWII veterans. I've been to Europe twice for research, and I've been to two WWII reunions. I'm looking for B-17 crew members who might be available to answer a few questions for me. I'm especially interested in the job of navigator. Thank you for your time. Please email me at tricia@thegoyers.com if you can help! Tricia Goyer

I was able to contact Maj. Edwin M. Carmichael's wife today. He has cancer, can't talk and is in poor health. I thought those who knew/know him and follow this list would appreciate the update. If any old timers are still monitoring this guest book, my dad, Louis Burti from Old Forge, PA apparently flew over with the 401st on A/C 447, Kickapoo, arriving at Kimbolton on Oct. 11, 1942. I also suspect that he might be the Operations NCO referred to as "Birdie" by Gen. James H. McPartlin in his account of the UNAUTHORIZED D-DAY MISSION in the stories section. Our name gets miss-spelled a lot, one of his dog tags reads "Berti" As he died in 1966, having retired from the USAF, I have little knowledge of his wartime experiences. I feel certain that anyone who knew 'Louie', would remember him and hope that if you are reading this, you will contact me. If you are a younger generation as I am, please ask your Pop (or Grandpa) if they knew him. Thanks

He is 6-7 gun ACE (shot six- seven planes in Germany down!. He as well, my personal hero, and too, are all of the people who fight to keep the USA safe are! My great grandparents had a young man who lived with them just before he entered the service in Arkansas. He was known to them as Luen Williams. My mother has several pictures of Luen in her photo album. She asked me to see if I could find out what happened. All she ever heard was that he went MIA in England in 1943. After searching for a while, I believe Luen to be T/Sgt Samuel L. Williams who went down with Capt. McClellan's Liberty Belle on March 22, 1943. If anyone has more information about Sgt. Williams, my mom would love to know more.

I would like to contact Lt. Corcoran  (sp?) who flew as pilot with the 323rd up to April '45; his crew was usually a "make-up" from the pool of flyers who were "orphans" from their initial assignments. One of the crew was Bryce Barnes, no relation that we could readily establish. Lt. Corcoran landed an empty B-17 on an emergency fighter landing strip in Belgium which was about 1000' long. I was flight engineer and stood behind him calling air speed as he landed. After refueling he, the copilot, and the radioman flew the plane to another field in France where the rest of the crew re-boarded and then returned to base. The mission we were on was to bomb either Prague or Vienna, I don't remember which. The initial target was clouded over so we were diverted to the more distant target, and consequently the fuel ran out resulting in dispersal of the formation on the return flight .Some planes landed back at the base, others in France, Holland and Belgium; I don't think any were lost. I'm sure many of our members were on that mission, but haven't read anything about it here. Hopefully someone can help me contact the above men. Thanks!

He was part of the crew on 42-107178 (It had no name but the target was Berlin May 24th 1944) and KIA in Sweden that same day. I believe he came from Texas. He now rests in Luxembourg Cemetery, and had a cross with the wrong year on it until a few years ago. Thanks for any feed back!

July 1, 2005 A poignant memory from my youth is a summer of 1964 scene in which a widow quietly weeps at her recently deceased husband's grave located in St. Agnes Cemetery outside of West Chester, PA. A neighbor of ours had just driven my mother and me to the cemetery to tend my father's grave. My mother and father were post-World War II immigrants from Ukraine and Dad had been killed in an accident that April and was buried adjacent to the widow's husband. Upon seeing the widow's grief we were acutely aware of her loss. I have never seen her since. Over the years and during many vists to the cemetery, I have repeatedly observed her husband's gravestone inscription: John Carroll Moran, M/Sgt 91st Bomb Group and wondered just who he was and what role he played in the air war over Europe. In recent years, Sergeant Moran's grave-site United States flag disappeared and was not re-issued as is customary for deceased veterans prior to the Memorial Day holiday. I purchased a new flag locally a few days ago and installed it yesterday in the metal flag-holder attached to the grave-stone. Well done, Sergeant Moran! Your efforts and the efforts of your fellow servicemen some sixty years ago are not forgotten. What price, freedom? You kept the bombers flying, helped break the back of Nazi Germany, and set the stage for my parents' freedom (and mine). Thank-you, Sergeant Moran and thank-you to your comrades. Today, on a 91st Bomb Group web site, I found a photograph of Sergeant Moran as a serviceman with the 401st ground crew in England. Is there anyone out there who is acquainted with Sergeant Moran and his service? Does anyone know his widow's name and her whereabouts? If affirmative, please contact Don Klapcuniak at klapcuniak@aol.com

Hello my name is Pete Minix, age 52, former Sgt, in the Marines and the Army National Guard. Over the last several years, I have been very fortunate to have interviewed, either by mail or in-person, over 130 WW II Veterans. I am not into making money on this and no information will be published or sold. This is strictly a hobby and a “labor of love” as I have always been interested in World War II for many years and it is just my way of keeping their memories and stories alive For every World War 2 veteran we loose a piece of history is gone. I would very grateful to hear from any Bomber crewman or ground crews or any family members of. My E-mail is pdmmm@msn.com. If you are interested. I look forward to hearing from you.

This is a phenomenal website! Something that most interested me most was Bernie Stanton's picture of many people grouped on and around a B-17. You state that this is a rare photo. I have one of these also, alas it is a different group of men (I think). My interest is, that I am looking for my father's BG and BS. I have no crew pictures. What I have is the memory of being told as a small child that he was a Bombardier on a B-17 flying missions over France and Germany. I have his graduation book from Aberdeen Proving Ground as 2nd Lt 29th Class 1943 Aviation Ordnance. I have his scrap book with pictures from Gowen Field in ID and MacDill in FL. I have pictures of planes. Mostly of B-17s. I have the photo like Bernie's, I have a series of photos labeld (602)(25 July 44)(1) thru (19). I have 3 photos of Bombs falling to their target. He also must have been a noncom before APG because there are photos of him with arm stripes. I also have a photo of B-17 Wham Bam (without 3 lightening strikes, as in other photos of Wham Bam). I have a photo of a B-17 which I think is called Pug-nacious. If I recall there is a hyphen in the word and I can not see the "P". I have been all over the internet, and people have been very kind and responsive. I just do not have any answers. I have his ASN#. And he enlisted from Yonkers NY where he grew up. Also, for the most part the B-17s in flying formation and those on the ground have a white triangle with a G in it and KY in the middle of the plane. I have been in touch with the 305th BG and the 366th BS but his name is not one that they have. If anyone has any ideas I would be so grateful. Thank you so much, 2nd Lt. Robert A. Rice's daughter Liz Rice-Sosne.

I have just discovered this website! My father, Earl R, Hedstrom was a Navigator of the 91st BG. I recently received a letter from my mom dated February 13, 1984. John C. Flinn, Jr. was seeking information about my dad. "I first met Earl at Ephrata, Wash. where our crew was first assembled. From there we traveled to Kearney, Neb. prior to going overseas to England in 1943 where we were assigned to the 91st Bomb Group at Bassingbourn, Herts. After Earl completed his assigned missions over occupied Europe he was transferred to London. My last contact with him was a card..." My father died when I was three years old. My memories of him are few, but precious. Information from my mom about my dad has been limited (she remarried). I look forward to reading this web-site in depth. I would also welcome contacts from people who knew my dad!!! Best wishes to all, Carolyn Bradley

My Dad S/Sgt. Vernon Ellis McNair was a mechanic, maybe a crew chief in the 324th. He lost a stripe one time for taxiing a B17 with the tail wheel off the ground.

I purchased a brass plaque that appears to be a memorial to several military people which includes the names: Capt. John E. Wade, T/Sgt. Tracy M. Johnson, Sgt. Bert H. Goyle, T/4 Ferold A. Krall, T/4 Louis H. Gardner, T/4 Roy C. Sack, T/5 John F. Watte, T/5 Sam A. Cumbo, T/5 Charlie Coffee, T/5 Elwood L. Wall, Cpl. Edmund Zablocki, Pfc. Joseph Aranow, PFC. Jewel J. Udowitz, Pfc. Addis P. Kirkpatrick. Any idea what it was for?

I recently discovered that I received correspondence from Roscoe V. Black, Jr., in October 1942, about 20 days after my birth. He hoped that it would be my "first ever letter", and I suspect it was since I found it in the back of my "Baby Book". Among other things, he wrote: “Jimmie, the main reason I’m writing you is to tell you this---I hope that by the time you’re old enough to read this letter that this nasty old war will be over and I’m here to say with the rest of the boys that this time we’ll do a good enough job so that you and your little friends won’t have to go through it again.” I had an older sister whom he mentions who was 21 years old at the time. I think they had been classmates at Wichita High School East. Earlier this year I discovered a newspaper article from July 1943 detailing the circumstances of his death on May 21, 1943 over Wilhelmshaven with the 324th Squadron. At some point in time a nephew of Roscoe's posted to a Forum (1/1/2001) but the link will not open and I'm unable to ascertain the nephew's email address. If anyone reading this knew 2LT Roscoe V. Black, Jr., or is related, I would like to hear from you. While his wish for me and my "little friends" didn't quite come true (I am a combat infantryman and hold a Purple Heart) I found his sentiment inspiring, even after all these years. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran!! Hooah!

Looking for information on my uncle Alex P. Fontecchio, radio operator with the 324th, although I did find his name (spelled as Fontecchie) in the 401st dailies. He flew on a/c 679 on 26 Nov 1943 on a mission to Bremen. Later in the war, his plane was shot down over Bay of Biscay, but plane crashed on land. He was injured during or just after the landing, and taken POW. German doctors at the POW camp saved the leg but he walked with a pronounced limp. He was from Orange, NJ. Any information would be so greatly appreciated. I have a few questions: 1) What is the MACR and where/how can I view these? 2) Jim & Suzi, are there any plans to transcribe dailies for the 324th? 43. Steve Pena, if you see this message, is it possible to look for a photograph of Alex Fontecchio in your archives? Thanks so much to all involved in putting this site together and maintaining it. Thanks to all those men who flew and those who kept them flying. Sincerely, Ken Mauro

Hi Just visited your site and was very interested in the history of the 91st BG, especially the period of 1942 - 45 while based at Bassingbourn. As a child I was fascinated with the memorial fountain in Royston's priory gardens, and when the fountain was 'dismantled', I was lucky enough to be given the plastic plaque that was on the fountain (my fathers friend was the local mayor) - The original of the plaque that I have is made of bronze and is held in the Town Hall vaults... the plastic replica that was on the fountain was badly vandalized, but I have cleaned it and painted it (bronze to match the original?). I could supply a photo of the plaque if anyone was interested. Please email me if you would like any details.

I remember some telling me there were five air dromes in the area, and the couple I lived with one up one down cottage was air crew, we would wait to hear the planes return and he would count them, some quite battered, it was a sad time if one was missing, I thought the place was called Hilliards Bumstead why that name stays in my memory baffles me, I cant find a place called this, I have now retired to Lincolnshire and feel I have been here before. can anyone help, my first husband was also in the RAF so I know about quarters etc. I have a corner of my heart for you all. thank you D Gover

The Guard force I formed have the honorary title of the Ragged Irregulars as a dedication and proud history of the 91st. A unusual place and group to be giving the title to but I want them to be proud of what they are and have read and informed them of the past of the title bestowed up on them. This I hope will allow the name of the 91st to live on. Thank you. Paul

Your site is a well of information. Congratulation Unfortunately I didn't find what I needed. I'm currently investigating the crash landing of 43-38860, Lt Robert Lawson, at Dour Belgium on feb.14 1944.Could you tell me if that B17 had a nickname or a nose art? I think I could be able to find some pictures of the wrecked plane. If you are interested, let me know how I can send them to you. Regards, Philippe

I just found out from my High School science teacher, that his father was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 and he was in the 91st. His name was Fred Pilcher and he was either in the 323rd or 401st. He was a crew member on the "Merry Widow" (?) and was shot down sometime in June of 1943. He became a POW and survived the war. I'm trying to locate any information, photo's or nose art on the Merry Widow. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Since several years, I'm investigating the crashes of the "Ritzy Blitz" and the "Passes Cancelled". I talked to several eye witnesses. Most of them are died now. For the area of Dithmarschen, located between the River Elbe to the south, the Kiel-channel to the east and the small river eider to the north, Ii received information about 75 crash-sites of aircraft, during ww2. Most of them allied aircraft. Maybe you still now me. Now I'm online.
